TOEFL iBT Speaking. In this integrated speaking task, you will read a short passage, listen to a lecture on the same topic, and then speak in response to a question about what you have read and heard. Do not look at the question until the lecture has ended. Do not look at the reading passage while you are speaking.
Reading Time - 45 seconds
Spatial Intelligence
Spatial intelligence, a highly developed understanding of space, is important when we are locating ourselves in various settings. Spatial intelligence probably emerged very early in human evolution, since survival depended on having a keen understanding of the landscape, such as being able to recall distances and angular relationships among landmarks. Spatial intelligence involves the ability to create mental imagery and to remember and use that imagery when needed. We use spatial abilities when working with graphic models of real-world scenes and with symbols such as maps, diagrams, or geometrical forms.
Now cover the passage and listen to the lecture. You may take notes, and you may use your notes to help you answer the question. After you hear the question, begin preparing your response. You may look at the question, but NOT at the passage. You have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
The professor talks about the movement of people through different spaces. Explain how these examples illustrate spatial intelligence.

Just as early humans needed spatial intelligence as they traveled in search of food, spatial skills are still important for people living in Arctic regions today. Because so much of the northern landscape looks so bare and uniform, every visual detail is important. When you have to cross wide spaces and then return home safely, you need a highly developed sense of space.
However, spatial intelligence doesn’t always depend on visual input. Even when people can’t see, they may still have spatial intelligence. For example, a two-year-old girl who was born blind showed amazing ability when she found the right path between two toys—after having walked to each of these toys only from a third location. Even though she’d never taken that path before, she found her way because she recalled the distances of the paths she already knew. She understood the angular relationship of the familiar paths and then used that information to move along the new path. When she was four years old, the same girl was able to use a map that she "read" by touch. Although she’d never used a map before, she immediately understood the concept of a map, including its symbols, and was able to use the map to guide her to the location of a toy in the room.

答案
- People who live in Arctic regions must move around in a landscape that looks bare and uniform. They need a highly developed understanding of space.
- A young girl who was born blind was able to find the right path between two toys after she walked to each of these toys only from a third location. This example shows that spatial intelligence does not depend on the ability to see. Spatial intelligence involves the ability to recall distances and angular relationships, and the ability to create and use mental imagery.
- The same girl was able to use a map to find a toy in the room. This example illustrates the spatial skill of working with maps and symbols.
