   No one would argue, I think, that money is unimportant. There are certain things that human beings need --food, shelter, perhaps medical cared-and these things cost money. But if one has enough money to live on, to pay for the basic essentials of life, is it important to have a lot more money than that? Will your life improve in proportion to the amount of money that you have? Money is important but it does not guarantee happiness.
   There is no denying that money can buy a lot. Maybe you do not need much money to pay for simple shelter, but how about if you want a nice, big apartment in a nice neighborhood, or if you want to buy a house? The fact is that people get on each other’s nerves if they are crowded together in a small space. And that a mar- fled couple or members of a family are likely to get along better if they are not constantly tripping over each other and asking each other not to be noisy--if each can find a little privacy from time to time. A big apartment or a house will allow them this privacy.
   Money can buy a spacious house, but not a really happy home, so money is not everything. It can buy you a bed , but not sleep; it can buy you a dock, hut not time; it can buy you a book, but not knowledge; it can buy you a position, but not respect, it can buy you medicine, but not health; it can buy you blood, ,but not life; it can buy you food, but not appetite; it can buy you sex, but not love; it can buy you insurance, but not safety; it can buy you companions, but not friends. There are so many important things in your life money can not buy. So even though you have a lot of money, you could not really be the happiest person in the world. It is important to remember, however, that money is only a means to an end, not the end itself.
