The use of artificial intelligence in the development of computer software makes it possible to produce intelligent robots, which are expected to do most of the drudgery that human beings are doing now. As far as I see it, the imposition of work that involves human intelligence upon robots will bring about a lot of negative effects despite some supposed benefits.
One of the benefits of employing machine robots for doing automatic to if is that they are almost physically unlimited. Physical exhaustion that a human being is subject to is simply irrelevant to a machine - robot. Lecturing four hours non - stop, for instance, which most probably tires a human teacher out, is only a piece of cake for a robot lecturer. Another obvious advantage is that the machine robot is immune from erring as long as it is correctly programmed. In the work that demands high precision, the robot can perform the task much better than a human being, who, as the old saying goes, is "to err" for physical, physiological and psychological reasons.
Beneficial as it may be to substitute robots for human beings, the negative effects involved are equally conspicuous. In the first place, the inflexibility of the program that is stored in the robot to direct its behavior determines the robot’s inability to adjust its actions in response to the changing situations. Take for example the employment of the robot as a traffic policeman. Though a robot policeman may be efficient in directing the traffic at crossroads in normal circumstances, it may be irresponsive to some special situation that needs flexibility characteristic of human intelligence. It may well turn a blind eye to and make no convenience for an alarming ambulance that is taking a patient dying of a heart attack to hospital, thus endangering the patient’s life. In the second place, the emotionless nature of the robot may penalize it where human emotions are necessary. Though a robot nurse can perform most tasks a human nurse does, for example, it never matches the latter in developing a friendly. trust relationship with patients, who would rather make friends with wolves than with such a lifeless, cold object.
In short, the negative effects of employing a robot in our work outweigh its seemingly positive effects. Though the advantages may stay with the machine forever, the disadvantages are not erasable until the emotional, fleshly robot is produced.
