    I can only agree with this statement partly because of the way I was raised. In a Chinese family, tradition and history play an important role in guiding a person’s judgelnent and feelings. For example, keeping the family together and working personal difficulties out with the help of the family are ways of living that we value, so the modern habit of simpling abandoning the family through divorce when problems get difficult is rejected by us. We consider our present to be the sum of our past, and lopping off the past means lopping off most of our lives.
    On the other hand, remembering tire past in some ways can be hurtful. For example, events such as tragic death, rape. or abuse, can be dwelled on so much that we cannot grow in the present. While we shouldn’t forget the bad things completely, we shouldn’t let them govern us. Also some past teachings may be corrupt and should be locked away. For example, past lessons in prejudice and hate can hurt us in the present and can ruin our future.
    The problem we face is how to let the positive parts of the past help us to make the present positive.
