According to a news report, the 309 service staffs working in the Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway were selected from more than 5,000 employees of the Beijing Railway Bureau. These members must meet several requirements: they must be female, be 28 years old or younger, have fair-complexion and a curvy figure, weigh less than 60 kilos and be between 165-170 centimeters in height. Some people think this is discrimination against the otherwise "unfit" employees. What is your opinion? Should we have these requirements for railway service staffs? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

Every Job Has Its Own Requirements
Recently, the somewhat stringent requirements for its staffs in high speed railway of Beijing Railway Bureau have caused much controversy. Having strict standards for gender, age, height, weight and even complexion and figure, the requirements have been criticized by some people as discrimination against those who cannot meet them. As far as I see it, it is natural that every job has its own requirements, and it is also understandable that Beijing Railway Bureau is doing so to maintain a good image.
First of all, we should realize and understand that each job has its particular requirements. Since the nature of every job varies, different employers have to seek for different qualities in their future staffs. For example, my brother works in an airline company as a member of the aircrew. During his job interviews, he had to go through very strict tests of eyesight, body condition, height and weight. Even after he is employed, if he fails to keep fit and gets overweight, he will be forced to suspend his duties and go to a training centre. It is clear that the airline company has all these requirements because they need healthy, strong and fit staffs on the plane in order to provide better services. Likewise, if you want to join the army, you will also be faced with a dozen of strict requirements. It is hence not strange that there are rules concerning body conditions for a job. We don’t need to make a fuss about this when the report is released.
Secondly, we should also understand that the Railway Bureau is trying to present a good image of its services. In China, it is a universally accepted fact that the stewards on the plane should look pretty and in good shape. If people do not regard the air hostess recruitment standard as discrimination, why is the similar standard in train crew problematic? In order to send a positive brand message, hiring young and pretty girls as the train crew is a sensible choice.
To conclude, having requirements for a certain job is only natural and the Railway Bureau’s decision to choose good-looking crews for their trains is understandable. Instead of criticizing these requirements in recruitment, we’d better equip ourselves with other advantages in order to be competitive.
