    "Turkey and celebration of the first harvest on the new continent", "the festival for the holly ghosts", "a special day for lovers", all these meanings about Thanksgiving, Halloween and Valentine’s Day are well-known by college students, and celebrating these holidays has also become quite common on campus and elsewhere. On the other hand, when asked about the history of Tomb-sweeping Day, the Mid-autumn Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival, some college students are not quite sure, and many of them don’t even celebrate those holidays any more. My first response towards this phenomenon is disappointment or even indignation. But when more deliberate thoughts are put into the issue, I would like to discuss it from both educational and commercial perspectives.
    First, with the English education in China growing at an unprecedented pace, the emphasis of which shifts from simple skill training to more comprehensive introductions about cultures and customers in English-speaking countries, it is quite natural that college students are now familiar with the western holidays. And for those who argue that as a Chinese, the students need to understand our own cultures voluntarily, I want to remind them that the younger generations nowadays are living in an age with so many sources trying to compete for their attentions. Given this background, how can we expect the students to know too much about our culture if we do not deliberately integrate that into our education?
    Second, commercial activity is another driving force for the popularity of western holidays. Just think about all the commercial promotions and special discounts during western holidays like Christmas and the Valentine’s Day, we can understand that for a generation living in a consumption age, this is another important reason they would remember and celebrate western holidays. Putting aside the discussion whether holidays should be cultural or commercial events, the fact reminds that commercial promotions and western holidays have a win-win result in regard to their influence among and profits from our college students.
    With the above analysis, I believe it is quite clear as to what measures need to be taken if we want to have some changes in this respect. A well-designed system to promote our own cultural heritages, including holidays and festivals, needs to be integrated into our education at different levels. And more activities, not necessarily commercial ones, need to be arranged in a style that is appealing to younger generations so that our traditions can be remembered.
