    A common phenomenon we cannot fail to see in recent years is that an increasing number of universities or colleges are merging into more comprehensive ones. For example, the merger between Beijing Union Medical University and Tsinghua University and the one between Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences and Sun Yat-Sen University. People’s attitudes towards university merger vary greatly. In my opinion, there are at least three advantages of university merger.
    First of all, through merger the two elite universities can amplify each other’s strengths and make up for their shortcomings, thus cementing their identities. They can share and optimize the resources of higher education and produce well-rounded talents by offering students interdisciplinary programs and courses.
    Secondly, the merger between a big university and a small one is also a win-win game for both. On the one hand, the merger is expected to lead to an extension of current degrees and graduate courses of the big university, making it better to meet the challenges of the competitive higher education and paving the way for it to become a first-rate university at home and abroad. Many of the 211 program schools today are the result of merger. On the other hand, the small university can rise rapidly in terms of reputation and social status by merging with famous universities. As a result, Student enrolments of the school would be doubled or tripled since nowadays more and more students desire to enter prestigious universities.
    Finally, the biggest advantage of university merger is cost saving. The executive and financial management of the two universities can be combined and unnecessary expenditure can be averted. Besides, because of the increase in student enrolments, the newly-formed university can have large classes, thus greatly reducing the cost of operation.
    Therefore, there are many advantages in university merger. However, a lot of things should be taken into consideration before a plan of merger is put forward, such as whether the two universities are adjacent or whether there are mutual benefits for both schools. Only by considering all those pracfical problems beforehand can a merger plan be carried out well.
