At least 53 people were killed and more than 100 others wounded in the latest suicide attack in Iraq. This time it was on a group of Shi’ite pilgrims. The bomb exploded near the city of Basra, just outside a police checkpoint on the main road to a Shi’ite shrine. Shi’ites were moving there to observe the end of an annual period of mourning. Tensions are particularly high between Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims now that American troops have withdrawn from the country.
