W:Really? Everyone else we’ve met so far has been a tourist, like us. I was beginning to think that there were no natives.
M:Well, San Francisco has a lot of different ethnic groups, so you might think you are seeing a lot of tourists.
W:What are the different ethnic groups?
M:Well, let’s see.After whites, the largest one is Asians, then African-Americans.
W:I see.
M:In fact, San Francisco has the largest Chinese community outside of Asia.
W:Do most of the Chinese people live in Chinatown?
M:Well,it’s true that China town is the center of Chinese culture here, but they live all over the city.
W:Do most American cities have so many different ethnic groups?
M:Well, the large ones do—Los Angeles, New York, Chicago. But maybe the different ethnic groups are more visible in San Francisco because the city is so small.
W:Hm... you seem to know a lot about this city.
M:Well, most San Franciscans think their city is pretty special. We like to talk about it. Besides,I teach the history at the university here.
