问题 Many people think of plagiarism as copying another’s work, or borrowing someone else’s original ideas. As a matter of fact, plagiarism involves both stealing someone else’s work and lying about it afterward. So plagiarism is an act of fraud, then what can be done to change the situation?

    There is no doubt that plagiarism is rampant in the modern academic community. However, as to the ways to prevent plagiarism, different people hold different views. Some insist on the improvement of morality. Still others argue for the complete implementation of the copyright law. In my opinion, the ways to avoid plagiarism include familiarizing people with acts of plagiarizing and imposing penalties on plagiarism.
    My suggestions lie in the following reasons. On the one hand, many people cite others’ words or ideas without knowing that they are acting plagiarism. As a famous Dutch humanist put it, “Nothing is more terrible than ignorance in action”, so scholars, teachers and students should be well informed of how or when to give appropriate credit for the source of borrowed ideas and words. On the other hand, punishments are essential to eradicate plagiarism. We can never fail to notice the fact that using others’ writing without any reference is widespread and usually goes unpunished at college. In this case, the punitive measures can be enforced ranging from failure in a particular course to expulsion from the university.
    In short, acquainting people with conducts of plagiarizing and punishing those who plagiarize can avoid plagiarism to a certain extent. I believe that these are the most effective and practical ways to solve the problem. And I hope that all the writers assume their responsibility to acknowledge their indebtedness to their sources.
