    The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the 5 th day of the 5 th lunar month, a calendar used for agriculture purpose in China.
    The festival is celebrated especially in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, but people of several ethnic groups throughout China and the world are also having celebrations on this day. The heroes we celebrate this festival for vary from region to region, but the best known reason is to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, an upright and honest poet and governmental official in the State of Chu, who committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.
    Eating Zongzi, dumplings made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, and racing dragon boats are the most commonly observed customs for this festival. While for people around me and myself, the Dragon Boat Festival is usually observed by eating Zongzi in our university cafeteria, and only some of us would opt to enjoy the boat racing on television. It seems that traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival, are gradually fading away from our horizon. The foods we eat on those holidays have become a more important reminder for us.
    Since they are an important ingredient in our tradition and culture, we surely should attach more importance to the understanding and celebration of our own festivals.
