    “We are losing our national and cultural identities. Because of recent advances in technology and the easy availability and speed of air travel, different countries are communicating more often and are therefore becoming more and more alike. The same shopping malls and fast food outjets can be found almost everywhere. So can the same types of office blocks, motorways, TV programmes and even lifestyles. How can we maintain the traditions that make each nation unique?"

答案     Efforts to establish a sense of national identity received new urgency under the pressures created by modernization and globalization. Movements to foster national culture and research related to national culture have come about as a result of such efforts.
    The impact of globalization has been associated with the destruction of cultural identities. However, I want to argue that national and cultural identity is much more the product of globalization than its victim.
    The complex formulation clearly implies that cultural identity is not likely to be the easy prey of globalization. This is because identity is not in fact merely some fragile communal-psychic attachment , but a considerable dimension of institutionalized social life in modernity. It is the product of deliberate cultural construction and maintenance via both the regulatory and the socializing institutions of the state; in particular, the law, the education system and the media. Take the school curricula for example. It plays a major role in enhancing national and cultural identity. All school curricula have been subjected to a comprehensive evaluation process over the past decades to cope with community changes.
    In a word, modernization and globalization is not something that would definitely destroy our national and cultural identity. It’s not yet the time to worry about this.
