    Those who have been to college lectures will find the following situation a con, non sight: the classroom is half empty; those attending classes are not always listening to the teacher; some are texting their friends while others have fallen asleep. Such situation poses a question to us: should class attendance be compulsory or optional? To answer the question, we should consider the nature and quality of courses and also the needs of the students.
    First of all, we should consider what courses are put in the school curriculum. If they are well designed and suit the levels and needs of the students, they should be made compulsory courses. Of course, the teachers’ professional and academic standards are also important in implementing course goals and ensuring desired outcome. Unnecessary courses and poor quality teaching can only lead to wasting time if students are forced to attend such courses. Secondly, those students at the top of the class and most competitive in their learning and also capable of studying independantly do not have to attend all the courses offered by the school curriculum. They should be encouraged to learn more under the tutor’s individual guidance, instead of studying what they already know.  In many world famous universities like Harvard and Cambridge, students spend much less time attending lectures. They gain their knowledge and skills by reading and doing research work.
    In conclusion, colleges should not force students to attend all courses without carefully considering the two factors discussed above. As a matter of fact, to bring up students who can meet the demands of our new era, our education needs reforming and traditional views on teaching and learning should be challenged. Only in this way can we hope to motivate more talented students to learn well and aim high in school and in their future jobs.
