One of the sweetest memories of my childhood was the first time I learned to ride a bicycle. My elder brother is the one who teaches me how and he was very patient with me. Honestly, without his help, I don’t think I’d have learned it.
I was about 6 or 7 years old at that time. I can’t exactly remember the age, but it wasn’t the age for a girl to learn how to ride a bicycle. However, my brother suggested that it be better if I learned this skill. He showed me how to ride. Although he was just a teen, he rode on his bike like an adult. And then, he asked me to give it a go. I said no cos I didn’t think I was ready for it then.
After seeing my brother ride and being his passenger for a couple of days, he insisted again that I should have a try. Unfortunately, I fell on the ground several times, so he had to help me keep my balance. He started by controlling the bicycle from behind so that I wouldn’t fall on the ground again. Gradually, seeing me making progress, he let go and I could finally ride the bicycle on my own.
It was a nice experience for me. Although I fell several times and got some minor cuts and bruises, I will always remember the happy moments I shared with my brother: how he helped me rise to my feet, how he gently and playfully called me a little fool and how I chased after his bike in the cool breeze. These are the happy memories that can always bring me a touch of tenderness.
