Question: The speaking discusses two possible solutions to the man’s problem. Describe the problem and the two solutions. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.
W: Wow, Scott! What is going on? I saw you here in the library at 8:00 am this morning. It’s almost 9:00 pm now. Have you been here the whole day?
M: Yeah, I’ll be here till closing time. Same thing tomorrow, too.
W: So what’s the big deal?
M: Well, you know I’m Professor David’s teaching assistant for the history class this semester.
W: Sure, that’s all you’ve talked about. Like what a great opportunity it is.
M: It is a great opportunity. That’s part of the problem. Dr. David told me yesterday he wanted me to give Friday’s lecture to students.
W: That’s just two days away! Now is your chance to show everyone how professional you are in your research area.
M: That’s the trouble! I know too much. I’ll never fit it all into a one-hour lecture.
W: Scott. You’re not supposed to tell them everything. You pick one important point and talk about that.
M: But that’s just half the problem.
W: What’s the other half?
M: Dr. David again. I have his other class too. He has an essay due on the same day as the lecture.
W: Easy. Just tell him about the conflict and say you’ll do the lecture another time.
M: That’s a terrible idea! It will look like I can’t handle responsibility. I have to do the lecture and don’t want to miss the opportunity.
W: Then do both: lecture and paper.
M: But I’m scared I’ll do badly on both of them! Oh Gosh! I feel too panic to do both.
W: Calm down. Just do your best!

答案 The student in the conversation faces a problem that he has been asked by the professor to give a lecture to the class in two days. Unfortunately, the student worries about the difficulty of the task, plus he has a major essay due on the same day. He is very stressful from having too much work and doesn’t know what to do.
His friend suggests that he reschedule the lecture because of the conflict. If this is unacceptable, the friend advises, he can just bear up and try to do both tasks.
Personally speaking, I think the man should reschedule the lecture and concentrate on his essay only.
I think the man should do both. First, the student needs to fulfill his duties and course requirements. By doing so, he will be able to make himself ready to work under great pressure. Second, there is nothing to panic. All the man should do is to take the challenge and get it over as it is the way people acquire and improve their ability.
