An Announcement of the Poetry Club
In recent years, the number of students attending the Poetry Club’s weekly readings has been simply disappointing. In order to stimulate interest and raise attendance, the school through campus newspaper announces that the Club will be adopting two new measures to increase students’ attendance. The first is that the time of readings will shift from Sunday evening at 7:00 to Wednesday at 3:00. A random survey suggests that more students are free at the latter time during the weekdays. Also, in the future, the latter half of our reading time will be devoted to students reading their own poetry.
Now hear a conversation between two students.
Question: The woman expresses her opinion toward the proposal of making some changes to the poetry club. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
W: What are you reading there, Tom?
M: Just a letter on the school newspaper to the poem editors. It says that the school is trying to raise students’ interest in poetry.
W: What else is on the newspaper?
M: Well, the school wants to shift the reading time from Sunday to Wednesday afternoon. I guess no one comes on Sunday, so...
W: That’s not a bad idea. Most students will go back home or go to the city center to do groceries or go shopping. They are just too busy on the original schedule. Even though they want to go to the Poetry Club, they just cannot make it. Don’t you agree?
M: Yes, I do like to get out on the weekend. A weekday reading might get more people.
W: Also, another good thing is that students get to read their own poems. That way you’re not just listening to people you don’t know. People will come to hear their friends read poetry. I’m sure more students will come and see their peers’ performances.
M: Great.
