The Method of Loci is a mnemonic device introduced and practiced in ancient Roman and Greek rhetorical treatises. OK, now that you have studied the concept of the Loci Method, I’m going to give you an introduction on specific approaches about how it works as I am sure you are all very curious.
The first step in the Loci Method process is setting landmarks. People remember lists of words by mentally walking a familiar route and associating objects with specific landmarks along that route. For example, taking a mental walk from your dorm to the student center: the first thing you see is the front door, next you will catch sight of a tree, after that you will see the front of the library, finally you will see the student center building. These are the landmarks selected along the way.
The second step, after selecting the landmarks, is to link the words to be memorized with these landmarks. If you want to memorize the planets in the solar system, you could start with Mercury as the front door, Venus as the tree, Earth as the front of the library and so on.
After these two steps are taken, a relationship is established between the landmarks and the words being memorized. Thereafter, on the way from the dorm to the student center, the front door reminds one of Mercury, the tree recalls Venus, and the library the earth. Landmarks appearing in order establish the memorization of the order of the planets.
