    Today marks an important milestone in the history of bilateral ties between our two countries. In the 3 1/2 decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations we have seen a tremendous deepening of the bonds that link China and Canada and our respective societies and cultures from trade and investment to health, education, environmental issues, human rights and culture and a full range of political issues. Our warm bilateral ties are firmly rooted in our strong people-to-people links. // For more than 100 years, Chinese immigrants have helped build our country and have contributed to all our major communities, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. There are now an estimated one million Canadians of Chinese ancestry. // For the seventh year running, China was Canada’s number one source of immigrants. We are also proud of the contributions that Canadians are continuing to make across China in the business community, through education and academic relations and of course the arts. // During Chinese leaders’ trip to Canada last month, both sides have agreed that the Canada-China relationship is working well. But they also agreed that we can do even better. We need to attain a deeper, more strategic relationship.   //
