   Nowhere is the discussion of emotional intelligence more pressing than in American schools, where both the stakes and the opportunities seem greatest. Instead of constant crisis intervention, or declarations of war on drug abuse or teen pregnancy or violence, it is time, Goleman argues, for preventive medicine. Do you really think a child of eight or nine really understands the difference between aggressiveness and assertiveness?"
