   People cannot avoid coming across tensions or awkward situations, or having dark moments, which might lead to anxiety, embarrassment, or depression. A sense of humor can help ease tensions, rectify an awkward situation, and lighten an otherwise dark moment.
   Firstly, humor can help ease tensions. Once an angry young mother went up to a salesgirl behind a counter and said, “I sent my little boy here to buy two pounds of plums and you gave him one and a half pounds!” The salesgirl was innocent and felt hurt by the woman’s accusation. But she replied calmly: "My scale is accurate, madam, but have you weighed your little boy?" An unpleasant quarrel was thus avoided and the mother apologized.
   Secondly, humor can help rectify an awkward situation. Once one of my classmates made a portrait of me. It was a clumsy job. So when he asked me about my opinion, I responded:
   "Hmm ... It probably looks better from a distance."
   But a glimpse at his countenance assured me that my words might have hurt him. So I immediately added:
   "Ah ... You know aesthetics better than I do. I mean, distance creates beauty."
   Thirdly, humor can lighten an otherwise dark moment. Once I was sitting for a long time in the doctor’ s crowded waiting room, thumbing through a bunch of magazines at least two years old. A patient who had been treated and was about to leave looked around the room at the rest of us and then at the magazine in my hands, and remarked, "Believe it or not, those magazines were brand new when I first came in this morning." All the people waiting anxiously in the room burst into laughter, and then we began chatting to while away the time.
   A sense of humor creates wonders. Humor to life is what color to flowers or clouds to the sky. Humor makes life worth living.
