                    the Dissemination of Knowledge or the
                        Cultivation of Moral Values?
    The expenditure of education in most developed countries such as Britain, the U.S. and Germany often outstrips that in other areas because it is widely believed that the importance of education is second to none, not only in its contribution to the social progress but also in its nourishment of the human spirit. But now, with what happened to 26-year-old Zhang Miao, people begin to wonder what the essence of education is, since the murderer in this tragedy was such an ignorant and merciless college junior! As to what education should bring to human individuals, it is generally held that education is supposed to target the cultivation of one’s ethical concepts as well as the acquisition of knowledge.
    Moral and ethical education, first and foremost, should be prioritized. Learning the basics such as science, arts and history helps one know the world, whereas learning to develop correct moral and ethical concepts teaches one to be an integrated human being. Take Yao Jiaxin as an example, as a 21-year-old college student in Xi’an Conservatory of Music; he had learned enough basic knowledge and skills related to his major, but his behavior demonstrated his foolishness and ignorance, which seems mismatched with him as a college student. Obviously, it can be seen that "helpfulness", "respect" or "compassion" were never taught and learned in his 20 years of education, which reflects a weakness in modern education—informative but morally deficient.
    Besides, the development of moral and ethical education in this new era will in turn give impetus to the dissemination of basic knowledge. Only when the young people of a society believe in the right moral values can this society further progress and move towards prosperity. Then, genuine cooperation and harmony among people can be realized. No society can develop if all its citizens are going crazy as if in a rat race, for immoral or even illegal personal gains and with no regard to basic moral behavior. In the long run, people would scramble against each other for their own personal interest at all cost. Murders such as Yao Jiaxin committed as well as robbery, fraud and bribery would run rampant. For this reason, one needs to be educated morally and ethically, since it is not enough for one to be just technically knowledgeable; one should be a good person first before anything else.
    Generally speaking, education is a lifelong career for everyone, and its importance can be hardly exaggerated. In this sense, a well-balanced education involving the dissemination of knowledge and the cultivation of ethical values will be most conducive, not only to individuals but also to the advancement of the whole of human society. No tragedy like Yao Jiaxin’s case would happen with a more comprehensive education.
