On Caring for Old People
Parents have devoted all their lives and energy to their children and when they are old, it is time for their children to repay their care and love. Therefore, it seems that it should be the children’s responsibility to take good care of their parents in their later years. However, I believe that a better way of ensuring that aged parents lead a happy and healthy life is to put them in nursing homes.
Living in nursing homes, they have more opportunities to communicate with their peers. As people age, participating in activities and taking part in social events become more difficult. Deterioration in physical and mental health, mobility limitations, and lack of communication can cause friendship groups to break apart, thus forcing elderly people into isolation. The isolation experienced by elderly people can lead to lowered self-esteem and depression which can, in turn, cause more serious health issues. However, in nursing homes, with each other’s company, they don’t feel lonely and can do a great deal of things together, such as doing morning exercises, playing games, and exchanging memories and stories from their past. Involved in activities, the elderly are likely to maintain an elevated mood state , which is beneficial to their health.
In such retirement homes, aging people can receive intensive medical care from professional doctors. Besides, they can receive a proper diet prepared by dieticians to meet their individual requirements. This is especially good for those old people in poor health. Moreover, they could have regular medical check-ups so that any disease could be diagnosed in its early stage. What is the most beneficial is that if any disease strikes them, medical services are immediately available.
Indeed, there are also benefits for children’s work and family life when nursing homes take over the task of caring for the elderly. Retired parents can be a burden to young families. The fact that old people are often ill and need a great deal of care can be too much for their busy children. Fortunately, with the help of nursing homes, children can be certain that their loved ones are safe and given medications on time. Thus, they can return to a more normal life. Because the people who are most likely to serve as the caregivers for the elderly still often have children at home and heavy workload at hand, it is a relief to once again be able to prioritize their needs.
Since nursing homes benefit seniors and other family members so much, I believe it is desirable for old people to spend their later years there.
