We should pay kids to do their jobs. If they don’t do their jobs, the children don’t get paid, therefore teaching them that a good work ethic shall be rewarded and a bad work ethic will get nothing. Also, paying kids for chores is like leading children’s steps into the real world, which makes them learn and take more responsibilities.
Stella (China)
Children are sometimes paid to do chores around the house. That’s not efficient. What you are doing is preparing them for something that they will have to do when they grow up. Adults get paid to do their jobs; children, however, don’t have jobs and shouldn’t get paid. Your parents don’t get paid to clean the house or set the table. If they aren’t allowed to get paid neither should you.

Paying kids for chores sends kids a clearly wrong message. In the absence of a payment, some children would willingly set the table, empty the garbage or make their beds. It converts a family obligation into just another commercial transaction and teaches that the only reason to do a less-than-desirable task for your family is in exchange for payment. Wow, that is not the message parents want to send. We want kids to contribute because they are important members of our family and everyone has to contribute.

Ridiculous! As a child myself, I do believe that it is absolutely ridiculous to pay your kids for doing household duties. I don’t receive pocket money (even though my parents are capable of giving) because I believe that my parents earn that money out of hard work, not out of cleaning up their own house.
Susan (Spain)
I think "earn money for chores" is the most common type of compensation. Kids are expected to do certain chores around the house in exchange for money. The benefits are that the child sees a direct correlation between effort and the money he or she receives. But for this to be effective, there must be punishment when the chores are not done; this, in turn, requires parents to keep track. And if there are several children in the household, that may be difficult.

Children have lives too. I understand that parents pay for all the things around the house, but kids need to be able to get paid too. What if they wanted to buy something but no one else wanted to give them money? They would be able to pay for it themselves. Especially for teenagers, they could need money to go to the mall or do something. So doing chores is a good way for them to earn and save money for a rainy day. It is a better way for them to collect money than simply asking for it from their hard-working parents!

Should We Pay Children for Doing Chores?
Paying kids for doing chores around the house is a new idea for Chinese parents. Supporters say that it is a good way to teach children the work ethic and help them to learn the value of hard-earned money. It can also be a wise way for kids to earn and save money for a rainy day. Opponents worry that it might devalue contribution to families by changing duty to a commercial transaction. Some suggest paid housework should be accompanied by punishment if the chores are not done.
Despite numerous tips for the right type of chores for kids of certain ages to do, Chinese parents are still hesitant about encouraging their children to follow suit through monetary means. More than a helpful hand in household trifles, children can learn a lot from paid housework.
Firstly, it can cultivate the work ethic into children. Through paid housework, children learn the value of their own labor. "No pains no gains" can be deeply rooted in their young minds. Secondly, compared with those who are seldom involved in any family duty, these children may develop a sense of responsibility and basic skills in dealing with everyday practices, which is a huge asset for their future life. Thirdly, paid housework can teach children to treasure money since every penny is earned hard through completing drudgery of one sort or another. In this way, they are unlikely to squander money the same way as the spoiled kids.
All in all, the material stimulus is not the sole way to teach children moral lessons. Kids should also be encouraged to contribute to their families voluntarily out of their love for their family members. Only by combining these two ways can children take an active participation in housework!
