Dear Sally,
     I do apologize for having to write to you that I won’t be able to attend your dinner party next Monday night. A friend of mine from Shanghai, who will come to Beijing for a conference, plans to see me next Monday. Since she keeps a strict schedule for the conference, it would be impossible for her to change the time of our appointment. I hope my absence from your party will not spoil your pleasure. I think some day next week I will call on you.
