Italy was sharply criticised for allowing the Kurdish guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan to leave the country on Jan. 6 and disappear again. Turkish officials urged their country’s neighbors in the Caucasus not to harbor the Kurdistan Workers Party leader, who is said to be now in Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian enclave within Azerbaijan. Any such protection, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said, would be regarded as a hostile act for which Turkey would "take necessary measures".
