There are similar stories in Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and other African countries. How did this happen?    The role of foreign financial aid in the development of poor countries has always been a topic of intense debate. It is believed that financial aid is the best way to help poor countries since it can benefit the poverty-stricken nations directly in infrastructural construction, primary education, employment and so on. Although the economic assistance contributes greatly to the poverty reduction of recipients, it may inevitably bring about many negative impacts, such as political interference and economic exploitation.
   As I see it, financial aid is indeed effective, but it is not applicable to every beneficiary country. For one thing, donor money can resume economic operation and stabilize the national economy in war-ravaged countries, but it’s not a long lasting approach for countries at peace to solve problems and sustain a healthy development. For another, there are other forms of aid that developed countries can provide for needy countries. For instance, volunteer teachers can be sent to improve the local education, which has a far-reaching impact on the development of those countries.
   In short, international aid shouldn’t only be about satisfying the poor countries’ financial demands in the short run, it should aim at promoting their healthy development in the long term.
