International medical guidelines call for pregnant women with advanced HIV to get a combination of AIDS drugs including nevirapine to prevent passing their infection on to their newborns during delivery. But in poor countries, combinations have been expensive and nevirapine has often been used alone, since studies have shown that a single dose can cut the transmission rate in half.

Argentine President Eduardo Duhalde has warned that the nation’s economic crisis threatens democracy in Argentina. Mr. Duhalde said Pope John Paul was correct when he made a similar statement. The leader of the Catholic Church also blamed bad management and financial wrong doing for the economic crisis. President Duhalde said a public work plan would be announced by the end of this month. Argentine officials say they have had good meetings this week in Washington. The officials met with the International Monetary Fund and American government officials. Argentina wants to borrow as much as 23,000 million dollars from the IMF. The money would help support the value of the Argentine peso.
