    Learning is one of the essential pleasures of the human race. Those who avoid learning often find life boring and meaningless, for they deprive themselves of the excitement and fulfillment in learning something new.
    The pleasure of learning is universal, everywhere to be found. Many of us have tasted the joy of learning by reading interesting books. Books are no lumps of lifeless paper, but a voice far distant in time and space, talking to readers, mind to mind, heart to heart. Beyond books, we can also enjoy the fruits of traveling, provided that we travel with an open mind to understand other people and other places, and an alert eye for all kinds of novel experiences. Finally, learning also means learning to practise, or at least, to appreciate an art. Every new art we learn blesses us with a new sense, by which we may enjoy the wonders of the world more intensely.
    If the pleasure of learning is universal, why are there so many dull, unhappy students in school? It is because they were made dull by bad teaching, by isolation, by surrender to routine and by their own laziness. The students who "suffer from" learning should break away from the bonds of textbooks and tests, and embrace various other fields of knowledge with renewed energy.
