    The statistic figures given by this table show there are some fundamental changes in family expenses in China from 1985 to 2005. The amount of money spent on food and clothing has decreased dramatically in the past twenty years, whereas that on recreation, education, health care and others has increased sharply. Especially, expenses on recreation and education increased most.
    The result analyzed can be explained by three reasons. First, people’s living standard has improved. Money spent to keep the family from hunger and coldness is not the major concern any longer. Second, people realize the importance of education. Third, people spent more money on recreation and health care in order to live a happy and healthy life.
    The above analysis tells us that people are no longer satisfied with basic living necessities; instead they pay more attention to their spiritual life, Undoubtedly, this trend will continue in the future
    With the increase of family expenses on recreation, education and health care.
