M: What are you working on at the moment, Beth?
W: (19)I’m making a TV series about women adventurers in history.
M: Hmm.that sounds interesting.
W: Yes, it is.(19)1 read an article in the newspaper about women adventurers the other day. I realized that I hadn’ t heard of any of the women before I read the article. They were incredibly brave and adventurous.
M: Women like who?
W: Harriet Quimby, for example. She’s the star of the first program.
M: Never heard of her.
W: That’s exactly my point. Harriet was a beautiful New York journalist.(20)She was very independent, extremely determined and she wanted to do everything that men could do. For example, she became the first woman to get a pilot license in the whole of the USA.
M: Really? Wow!
W: Yes, and she was also very ambitious. She had only had her license for a few months when she decided to become the first woman to fly across the English Channel.
M: And didn’t that make her famous?
W: No.it didn’t. She set off on the Tuesday in April 1912, from England, even though the weather was really bad.
M: And planes in those days were fairly basic.
W: (21)Yeah. She couldn’ t see anything and she got lost. So, when she landed she didn’t know which country she was in. But luckily, it was France.
M: So why wasn’t that front-page news?
W: Well.it was the same day the story of the Titanic was on the front page of every newspaper in the world.
M: Oh.no!
W: And she died two months later in a flying accident in the USA. She was only 37.
19. Q: What is the TV series the woman is making about?
20. Q: What do we learn about Harriet Quimby?
