     (1) In recent years there has been a worrying phenomenon that many students ignore the study of Chinese. Many students are learning English with great zeal. Our native language Chinese, on the contrary, is ignored and left out in the cold.
     (2) One of the main reasons for this phenomenon is that most students take it for granted that they’ ve already mastered Chinese for it is their mother tongue. Besides, Chinese skills seem to be of little use in the job hunting so few universities and students put emphasis on it. Students’ weakness in Chinese would inevitably lead to their ignorance of Chinese culture. Consequently, the status of 5,000 years of Chinese culture will be shaken.
     (3) This situation must be changed. First, it is necessary that we should not treat Chinese merely from a prospective of utility. Chinese, as our mother tongue and one indispensable part of our culture, should be given due attention at any time. Second, colleges and universities should take measures to promote Chinese study and research.
