   University tuition system in China has become the focus of people’s attention because it involves the interest of millions upon millions of people. As I am an educational worker, I am also interested in this topic. Recently I have read an article in a magazine saying that on the average, a college student’s annual tuition fee is 5,000 yuan; a graduate student’s annual tuition fee is 8, 000 yuan; a doctor candidate’s is 12, 000 yuan. But a private university’s tuition is three to five times higher than a public university’s.
   As this is a controversial topic, there are proponents as well as opponents. Proponents think that colleges and universities cannot go round by using the government’s investment in education alone. Colleges and universities can make up for the shortage of educational investment by charging tuition fees from college students.
   Opponents argue that tuition fees at colleges and universities are so high that many students face very great economic pressure. They complain that though there are tuition wavers in some colleges and universities, very few students are entitled to them. Some students pay their tuition fees by bank loans. If they cannot pay off their loans when it is time for their graduation, their school authorities won’t let them graduate.
   In my opinion, it is rational for college students to pay their tuition fees. Since China has already implemented market economy, higher education should also be involved in market economy. What really counts is that colleges and universities should try every means to relieve college students’ overload by creating many opportunities for them to earn money so that they can finish their schooling rather than become dropouts.
