    Since the reform and opening policy carried out, great changes have taken place in China: the living standard of the people has improved greatly; the old planning economy has been replaced by the market economy. Along with these changes comes the loss of the Chinese traditional values.
    In the market economy, it’ s inevitable that the traditional values will loss. Because the new economy pattern forms a fast moving society, which emphasizes efficiency, thus requires new suitable values, such as competition, self-independence. To be accepted by the new pattern, people have to adjust their values and in the adjusting process, Western values substitute the traditional ones which seems unsuitable with the society.
    The loss of the traditional values may cause many problems and even great loss for our nation. We know that the values as an important part of culture, are the heritage of our ancestors, and have been there for thousands of years; with the test of time, they are proved to be invaluable. The loss of traditional values does harm to the transmission of culture.
    China attracts so many foreigners in the world partly because of its excellent culture; losing the essential part of the culture, then the nation will gradually lose its culture. Every nation poor or wealthy has its own culture which stands for the spirit of a nation; a country that has not its own culture will gradually be ignored by the world.
    So in the modern, fast developing world, we should still stick to the traditional values, apply them into the new environment, and add new content to them in order to help them keep up with the changing world, rather than throw them away.
