Some parents allow their children in college to do part-time jobs. Others require their children to focus on their studies. What do you think is better for first-year students and why? Include details and examples in your explanation.

Please Listen Carefully.
The Internet has been an important part of people’s lives in the 21st century. Read a piece of news in the campus newspaper about the misuse of the Internet. You will have 45 seconds to read the news.
Begin reading now.
Now listen to two students as they talk about the news.
Student A There was a conference today about the Internet dangers to young people. The moderator emphasized the need to teach us not to respond to aggressive postings or comments in chat rooms.
Student B We know better than to respond to flaming. It’s like my grandma used to say, "If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. "
Student A True enough. We know what we should do. But the moderator also pointed out that there’s a disparity between young people’s everyday values and their Internet values.
Student B How so?
Student A Well, most young people would never even think of stealing an apple, but wouldn’t bat an eye at downloading thousands of dollars of entertainment.
Student B No one pays for it?
Student A Some people paid a buck for each of those songs they downloaded off the Internet! But we still have file sharing software on the computer. Even if we paid for those songs, it’s illegal to share them. Now, Internet service providers will be required to turn over the names of clients who upload or download private property.
Student B That sounds good!
Student A I don’t want the FBI at our door with a search warrant. We’ll have dinner with Mike, and ask him to delete that software.
Student B It’s a good idea!

答案
I uphold the idea that students have the right to do part-time jobs if they are inclined to do so under appropriate conditions, which I mean that they should treat their studies as the top priority. As we know, the goal of high school education requires students to take part in full-time study, while the goal of education in university is to foster both professional and practical skills. But the prerequisite for taking a part-time job is that students master well their professional knowledge. After all, studying is the main objective of a university education.
