答案                Equality of Opportunity is Hard to Achieve
We are told constantly that people are born equal, and that there is equal opportunity for all. Is that true.* It seems to me that this is nothing but a cliché propaganda. I admit that there is relative equality in certain areas, but the objective circumstances lead to unequal opportunity between people. There are a lot of reasons that cause this phenomenon.
First, the imbalance of the economic development between different countries and areas has a big influence on the economic and cultural development of people. People in rich countries  and areas are certainly more privileged to have the opportunity to the access of better education,  better employment, etc., which in turn will further widen the gap between people.
Another thing that prevents people from enjoying equality of opportunity is discrimination. Just take a simple example to illustrate this. Many people have sex discrimination. So many companies and government organizations openly declare that they prefer male employees than female ones. Upon graduation it is usually much easier for boy graduates to find a job than even bright girl graduates. In Beijing, it will be helpful for you to get a job if you are a Beijing resident. Apart from sex and regional discrimination, in some places and countries, there are other kinds of discrimination, for instance, racial discrimination. All of this blocks the practice of equality.
Then, the corruption in many professions also prevents equality of opportunity from realization. In jobs, the key factor for a person’s promotion is not his meritocracy, that is, his ability, but his relationship with the leader or the boss. Because of this a lot of able people are unable to get promoted, whereas some snobbish and mediocre persons may have the positions they are unqualified for.
In short, it is really hard to have equal opportunity. So what should we do? Complaint is useless; inaction is even worse. Face the reality and do what we can. If we cannot change the surroundings, we can change and perfect ourselves; if we cannot eliminate inequality completely, we can work together to make this world a bit more equal.
