Nowadays, more and more college students live in rented rooms outside the campus. They argue that living off campus provides them with a quieter environment for study and gets them out of the possible conflicts with their roommates. Some colleges even encourage the students in doing so. However, in my opinion, living off campus is by no means a wise way to spend the four years college life, for the loss outweighs the gain.
First, a quiet environment for study is important, but academic studies do not mean everything. Do not forget that the unique atmosphere in dormitory is also part of college life. Do you remember the pillow fighting on the night after the final examination, the big surprise thrown to you on your birthday by your roommates, and the crazy parties held at midnight on some joyful festivals? All these will be the most precious memories in your life. How can you just lose these unforgettable experiences by living off campus?
Second, although it is quite natural to have conflicts with roommates, escaping the problems by living off campus is not the solution. To be sure, some of us may be sensitive, hot-tempered, and even unreasonable. These characteristics make the life in dormitory sometimes unpleasant. But living in the dormitory should be considered a compulsory course of college, for it helps us to understand the meaning of tolerance, it teaches us to live with different people in harmony, and it also engraves the spirit of cooperation on our minds. Those who choose to live off campus lose their credits on this subject, and the loss will surely turn out to be a fatal deficiency when they begin their career in face of more complicated social relations.
Third, living off campus will also mean a heavy financial burden to our parents. The rent of a room, not to say that of an apartment, is often beyond the budget or means of a family. As college students, we haven’t begun to earn our own money yet. Our parents are already having a hard time paying our tuition and providing for our daily expenses. How can we have a clear conscience to ask for more?
The list of disadvantages is far from complete. There are also security problems, administrative problems, so on and so forth. So my suggestion is that the college authorities should set up rules to forbid students to live off campus.
