In the first operation of its kind, customs officials from Britain and the Soviet Union have worked together in seizing more than three tons of cannabis with a street value of 10 million pounds. The drugs originated in Afghanistan, from where they were smuggled by rail to Leningrad. Soviet customs officials learned they were bound to Britain and tipped off their British counterparts. The cannabis which was hidden among a large cargo of licorice root was secretly removed when the ship docked in Britain.  Surveillance teams then followed the cargo after it was unloaded and arrested five people.
