China has for the first time passed legislation outlawing domestic violence and sexual harassment of women. China’s most senior law-making body, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, announced that from now on gender equality would be a national policy.      Domestic violence is a massive problem and it’s a major contributor to China having the highest rate of female suicide in the world. Sexual harassment in the workplace is also a growing problem. Amazingly, until today, women who suffered from either had no legal recourse. That has now finally changed. Women will be able to take legal action against those who harass them and against abusive spouses. It will however take a lot more than legislation to change deeply engrained attitudes towards women that go back over two millennia.
