    The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional and statutory festival in China, which occurs on May 5th on the Chinese lunar calendar. Legend goes that the festival was set in memory of a great poet, Qu Yuan, who had thrown himself into the river of Miluo. After the death of the poet, people searched the river for his body but in vain. In honor of Qu Yuan and for fear that his body might be nibbled by the fish, people decided to boat on the river and throw rice-pudding into it so that the fish would eat rice instead of the poet’s dead body.
    When the festival was set, it became a ritual to race dragon boat and eat Zongzi (a kind of pudding made of glutinous rice) on the day. Nowadays, we still hold on to the custom, but some of them have taken on different meanings. For example, dragon boat racing is often related with the virtue of cooperation and teamwork. Besides racing dragon boat and eating Zongzi, we also observe the festival by drinking realgar wine and hanging healthy herbs on the front door, which are considered helpful in driving evils away.
    As a Chinese traditional festival, the Dragon Boat Festival has been listed among the intangible cultural heritages of the nation. For every Chinese, the festival means not merely a three-day’s holiday, but a valuable inheritance which makes us Chinese people special.
