     Concorde is the fastest commercial aircraft in the world./It can fly at twice the speed of sound. /It was developed jointly by Britain and France/ at a total cost of about £1,500 million./When it first went into service with British Airways and Air France in 1969, /it was hailed as a splendid technological achievement/and large orders were anticipated from foreign airlines.
      In order to recover the huge development costs,/the governments of Britain and France needed to sell/at least 150 Concorde to foreign airlines./No orders were received, however,/ and only 16 of the planes were ever built. / The manufacturing plant was closed down in 1979.
     At present, Concorde flies regularly from London and Paris to New York and Washington./Until recently, operating losses were so high/that both British Airways and Air France were considering phasing out Concorde completely./ Nevertheless British Airways manages to make a small profit/on its Concorde flights.
