   Independent learning is the ability to identify, formulate, and solve problems; to grasp and use basic concepts and principles; and to gather and assess data exactly and critically. The ability of active, self-reliant learning is critical to acquire new knowledge and learn new skills.
   That many Chinese students are criticized for their lack of initiative spirit and creative ability has its special social and cultural grounds. In Chinese traditional culture, which places the value on respectfulness and humbleness, children are quiet and passive. At home, they look to their parents to tell them what to do; at school they are used to following the instructions and guidance from their teachers. This gradually results in their lack of independence and individuality. Although they have grown up when they enter the college, they are actually not mature in mentality.
   To change the situation, first, students should change their attitudes towards their learning.  They should be active participants in their own intellectual growth, not passive recipients of information. In class, they should learn to ask questions, and to search for answers themselves; they should extensively develop their abilities to seek out information, to analyze and apply it in practice. Teachers should also provide them with more freedom for research and experiment so as to help them become independent life-long learners.
