Listen to the following passage. Altogether the passage will be read to you four times. During the first reading, which will be done at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning. For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 15 seconds. The last reading will be done at normal speed again and during this time you should check your work. You will then be given 2 minutes to check through your work once more.
Desert Animals
Some desert animals can survive the very strong summer heat and dryness / because they have very unusual characteristics. / The camel, for example, can bear an increase in the temperature of its body. / In addition, it can drink an enormous amount of water at one time. / The kangaroo rat, on the other hand, obtains all the water it needs / from water that it produces during respiration. / However, most desert animals can neither store nor produce water in their bodies. / Therefore, they need to find some way to avoid the strong sun rays. / Most of them are active during the night / and only after the sun has set does the desert come fully to life. / The night is relatively cool, and the darkness provides protection. / So the coming of darkness is the signal / for the large majority of animals to continue their search for water and food. / When morning comes, most of them seek shelter again. /
