    Independent learning is the ability to identify, formulate, and solve problems, to grasp and use basic concepts and principles, and to gather and assess data exactly and Critically. The ability of active, self-reliant learning is critical for students to acquire new technologies and learn new skills.
    Chinese students are criticized for their lack of initiative spirit, which has its special social and cultural backgrounds. In Chinese traditional culture, which places the value on respectfulness and moderation, children are quiet and passive. At home, they look to their parents to tell them what to do; at school, they are used to following the instructions and guidance of their teachers. It gradually results in their lack of independence and individuality. Although they have grown up when they enter the college, they are actually psychologically immature.
    To change the situation, first, students should change their attitudes towards learning. They should be active participants in their own intellectual growth rather than passive recipients of information. In class, they should have enough intellectual curiosity to ask questions, to search for answers themselves and discuss what they have learned with teachers and other students. After class, they should extensively develop abilities to seek out information and to analyze and apply it into practice. Teachers should also provide them with more freedom for research and experiment so as to help them become independent life-long learners.
