问题 In what field might the example of Helen Keller be fit? [br]
One of the earliest success stories in the field of special education was the case of Helen Keller, a young blind and deaf girl. Without the ability to see or hear, the young Keller matured very slowly. She had very little self control and was very difficult for her parents. Her family was very disturbed by her terrible behavior and her inability to be controlled. Helen Keller’s life was changed by her relationship with Anne Sullivan, a teacher recommended to Keller’s parents by the inventor of the telephone and champion of the deaf, Alexander Graham Bell. Anne Sullivan became Helen Keller’s teacher for life, Anne, herself, had been born partially blind, but she had some of her sight restored as an adult. She constantly tutored Keller with consistent discipline and eventually taught the girl how to use language by writing out letters on her hand and letting her touch the objects the words represented. In time, Keller was accepted to Radcliffe College and Anne Sullivan accompanied her, transcribing the lectures onto Helen Keller’s hand. Keller and Sullivan’s methods of communication enabled education of the severely handicapped to enter a whole new level of sophistication without the need for sophisticated technology.
