    The essence of law is rehabilitation and retribution, which deter potential lawbreakers and punish those who break the law. In the spirit of this, I think serious law offenders should be sent to prison, while those with mild offence could be made to work.     On the one hand, the deprivation of freedom is a fearsome consequence which rehabilitates criminals and deters potential ones. Imprisonment confines one’s movements and actions, which force him to repent his crime. It is hoped that criminals will feel guilty and regretful by serving time in prison, thus transforming themselves into a law-abiding citizen. Imprisonment also sends a warning message to those potential lawbreakers that they will pay if they break the law. On the other hand, if the offence is not that serious, the penalty should be more diverse. For instance, pick-pockets are better made to pick up garbage in the communities for a year, instead of serving 1-month prison time. The community service is more helpful to get law-offenders involved among people and feel ashamed about their wrong-doings. Besides, by working for the community, they could gradually rebuild a sense of belonging, which might prevent them from breaking the law again.
    In conclusion, for those serious offenders, they should be sent to prison and for those with mild offence, they should be made to work.
