                     Chinese shopping habits changing
A group of new mainstream customers is emerging in China, rapidly advancing in size and purchasing power, the 2012 annual report of Chinese consumers released by Mckinsey & Co said.
The new mainstream customers are willing to trade up, rely on the Internet more to conduct searches, take emotional considerations more into account when making purchases, trust brands and prefer online shopping, said Max Magni, partner and head of McKinsey’s Greater China consumer practice.
Many experts believe these mainstream customers change their shopping habits due to their growing income or increasing deposits in the bank. The report found that the Chinese people are still fond of saving. The average respondent reported saving 22 percent of his income, a full 8 percentage points higher than his counterparts in the US and Great Britain.

答案                   What determines our shopping habits?
Some people believe that personal financial situation is the main factor that influences people’s shopping habits. However, I think this is only a part of the whole picture.
It is true that in most cases personal savings or incomes can decide what we want to buy. Just as the 2012 annual report of Chinese consumers released by Mckinsey & Co shows, a new group of customers choose to shop online for their trusted brands or seek emotional considerations without worrying money. All these shopping behaviors have a close link to their fondness of saving.
However, this new shopping habit is not just determined by the customers’ deposits. Age is another important factor. Children tend to buy stuff like snacks and toys for fun while young office ladies tend to buy luxuries such as bags and world-famous branded clothes. In contrast, customers in 40s are likely to spend their income on groceries and home appliances. Also, another factor that can greatly influence how one spends money is gender. Men are typically active in cars, watches or other necessary items whereas women would just enjoy shopping here and there for happiness.
To conclude, money is a very significant factor that shapes the habit of shopping, but it is not the only reason for people’s buying behaviors as age and gender can have great effects as well.
