The humans went to considerable expenses and trouble to bring the bears together, but they could not get them interested in each other. It seems that all pandas are hard to please; the Washington Zoo has been struggling with its own pair for years, without much result.
   With most animals, however, the breeding programs, which are the second concern of the zoos, work well enough to save vanishing species from complete extinction. The American buffalo, extremely rare thirty years ago, now counts forty thousand head, thanks to the Bronx Zoo, which started breeding them.
