(16)Los Angeles’ Brentwood School hosted one of the first young women’s conferences on Saturday, called "It’s our turn." The rumors about its surprise guest started spreading days before. Tension in the Brentwood School gymnasium rose to a climax at around 3:30 p. m. At that moment out walked the pop star on the planet: Lady Gaga. Girls screamed and an entire gymnasium crowd rose to its feet to cheer.(17)Journalist Maria and Lady Gaga took seats on the stage and began an honest 30-minute conversation about growing up, knowing yourself and using your voice to be kind. Maria began the dialogue by noting that Lady Gaga is an incredible example of being brave and having a genuine voice but that she wasn’t always that way. "I started having trouble with girls in middle school," Lady Gaga said. "I always knew that I wanted to do something very career-oriented, and I always wanted to be a musician. "(18)Some of the biggest themes in Lady Gaga’s cause-related work are equality, bullying and individuality. When Maria asked her if she spoke to her parents about her condition when she was young, Lady Gaga replied with a laugh, "they wanted to lock me up. Sometimes your parents don’t always help because they just want you to be safe and be home."(19)She spoke to the young women in the gymnasium about her experience of being left out, teased and treated as someone invisible. "Being excluded from classmates is painful," she said. The conversation was full of personal stories of how Lady Gaga struggled when she was at the age of many of the young women in the gymnasium, which benefited the students a lot.
