    As is revealed in the above table, the past two decades have seen a sharp decrease of 49% in family expenses on food and clothing, while expenses on recreation, education, health care and others have increased respectively by 12%, 24%, 11% and 2%.
    To account for this phenomenon, people have come up with numbers of reasons which arc listed as below. For a start, the price of food and clothing has remained relatively unchanged during the past years while people’s average income has risen dramatically, which contributes to the decrease of spending percentage on food and clothing. Furthermore, according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, once people are satisfied with physical living, they will undoubtedly begin to take an interest in recreation and education. Finally, with family income increasing, people start to attach more importance to medical care to improve their health.
    Such changes have a significant impact on both individuals and the whole society. On the one side, the overall quality of people’s life has improved greatly. On the other side, the government will lay greater emphasis on the construction of recreation, education and health care facilities.
