Ironically, in the United States, a country of immigrants,
prejudice and discrimination continue to be serious problems.
There was often tension between each establishing group of 【M1】______
immigrants and each succeeding group. As each group became
more financially successful, and more powerful, they included 【M2】______
newcomers from full participation in the society. Prejudice and
discrimination are part of American history; however, this
prejudicial treatment of different groups in nowhere more unjust 【M3】______
than with black Americans.
Blacks had distinctive advantages. For the most part, they 【M4】______
came to the "land of opportunity" as slaves and they were free to 【M5】______
keep their heritage and cultural traditions. Unlike most
European immigrants, blacks did not have the protection of a
support group; sometimes slave owners separated members of
the same family. They could not mix easily in the established 【M6】______
society because of their skin color. It was difficult for them to
adapt to the American culture. Even after they became free people,
they were still experienced discrimination in employment, housing 【M7】______
and education.
Until the twentieth century, the majority of the black
population lived in the southern part of the United States. Then
there was a population shifting to the large cities in the North. 【M8】______
Prejudice against blacks is often associated to the South. Slavery 【M9】______
was more common there and discrimination was usually more 【M10】______
easier to see. [br] 【M5】
